February 22nd- Christchurch remembers

February 22nd is etched into the memories of all Cantabrians as the day the massive earthquake struck Christchurch killing nearly 200 people and maiming and traumatising so many. 12.51pm is a time we will never forget where we were, who we were with and what we saw.  Our love and thoughts go out to all those who, 3 years ago today, lost their loved ones, family and colleagues.  To those who have been disabled, mentally stressed and lost their homes and livelihoods, our love is reaching out to you today as well.  We have learned many things. The human spirit is an amazing experience to see in others and we will always be grateful to those who risked their lives to continue rescues in extraordinarily scary situations. Thousands of shocks later we have learned to be more prepared, to love those who come into our lives daily and to make the most of every day. Kia Kaha Christchurch, Stay Strong.

Caring for your artworks

When a client purchases a piece of artwork from Art Box Gallery, we are happy to give advice regarding the upkeep of your new painting. The advice will depend on the medium (eg oil, acrylic, pencil, pastel etc) and the 'ground' ( surface) that the picture has been created on. Ultra violet light is very harsh particularly in New Zealand and pastels and watercolours especially do not respond well in places with very bright conditions. The pigments will fade in time.

At Art Box we will aim to find a wall space in your home that will be suitable for the right conditions. We do not recommend original artwork to be hung in damp conditions such as in bathrooms and showers. The rear of a canvas will build up a layer of mould in time or a stretcher bar may warp as examples.  Should you wish to keep an unframed piece dust free, we recommend using a wide soft paintbrush to gently brush in one direction and then another across the piece. Hold the painting at an angle so that the dust falls down free of your art. Never dust the surface with a stiff bristle brush, feather duster or cloths whether damp or dry. The fibres of the cloth will adhere to the tiny brush marks and cause damage. Also never use glass cleaner or cleaners and fly sprays near your artworks. They may well dissolve the varnish and the surface of the paint. If you have a cleaner please let them know this as well as we have had an example of this happening! When handling paintings white gloves are useful or failing that clean, grease free hands. We will touch on other handling/cleaning/preserving tips in time.

Lecture on  Colour by Kaffe Fassett

What an amazing, stimulating, funny, entertaining and colourful evening last night at Beckenham School. Organized by Fenella and Penny and the team at Stitch it was a dream come true for me meeting and listening to this energetic designer from California.  He throws all the rules of colour wheels out and with the help of his artist partner, Brandon Mably, comes up with breathtaking designs and colourways.  Now living and working from London his focus and energy to create is awesome.  The paintings were my main interest but he described in detail how he got into design and textiles and there was a great slide show of many different sources of inspiration from their world travels.  Good question asked "When do you get to sleep"!!!  Here's a photo of my new book which Brandon and Kaffe signed on the night Dreaming in Colour.  I'll be spending the next few days poring over it.

Tonight sees the visit of Kaffe Fassett to Christchurch and I am really looking forward to a talk he is giving locally. Kaffe is a hugely inspirational figure for my own artworks. His use of colour and design fascinates me and earlier this year I visited the London College of Fashion and Design to see his exhibition ' A Life in Colour' in both artworks and textiles.  He has written many books and his practice of knitting, quilting, needlepoint and mosaic is well known worldwide.  Kaffe was born in California and in the 1960's relocated to London.  Pattern, colour and meticulous design are used to great effect. Fassett spent time in India which is so evident in his stimulating use of colour. This image that was taken at the London show is one of favourite groupings of examples of his paintings. I just love the colour, repetition and subject matter. An evening with Kaffe Fassett and his partner Brandon Mably is being held tonight at Beckenham School Hall and has been organized by local business 'Stitch'.

"Looking back and reflecting on where creativity has taken me, I see how basic humble elements in life can lead to the highest flights of fantasy"  (Kaffe Fassett).
