When you start painting it can be hard to know what colours to buy at the art shops. There are often up to 60 or 70 colours for each manufacturer! Basically you only need a small number of colours to start with and this help the amateur learn how to mix rather than just using straight from the tube. It can be tempting to buy all sorts of colours but at Art Box we recommend that a good choice includes the following: A warm yellow such as cadmium yellow, cool yellow such as lemon, and yellow ochre. Permanent rose, cadmium red. Ultramarine blue and phthalo blue, deep violet and phthalo green. Remember that you are most likely to use white so buy a bigger tube - titanium white is most useful. I try to avoid black and use Paynes grey instead. Try to avoid mixing more than three colours at a time or your results will always turn to mud!
