Viv Wotton
Viv Wotton is an Ōtautahi, Christchurch based artist, who after years in banking and other corporate businesses made the career changing decision to take her love of art more seriously; beginning formal art studies in 2012 – graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts through the Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design (Auckland) at the end of 2016.
“I needed to prove to myself I was more capable of a deeper understanding of art and to honour what drove me to create and paint in the first place.” “I feel incredibly grateful I was able to take the deep dive into academic study and allow that to inform the practical, physical making”.
Although Viv graduated (and is more widely recognised) for her evocative landscapes, her practice and choice of materials can vary. Viv’s passion lies mostly in painting, drawing and printmaking. From the somewhat loosely abstracted or representational landscapes in oil, photo-real charcoals to dry-point etching and printmaking, her work often deals thematically with identity, human connection, memory and creating art that somehow reflects her sense of belonging. Brooding, evocative and often seductive and rich, they continue to question and connect people with a sense of place and provide a place of rest.
""I think in everything I create, I’m always looking for that certain moment in time, the pause, the subtlety of connection, the small details, the glimmer of light, the simple moments. Because art is often the result of a huge amount of research, thought, experiences and experimentation, I simply want to create something which is meaningful (for me) but which also hopefully might question, connect and speak to the viewer, no matter who they are.”
